Update for March 28, 2006

CCSP -No till Farm

News for the Week:

Green winter wheat leaves can be observed above the surface.  Our CDC Falcon winter wheat is expected to survive based on the past four years experience.  Dr. Fowler who developed the variety said that it had only a moderate field survival rating compared with some of the other varieties he has released.  Perhaps this Canadian variety survives and performs better in this area than originally predicted.

We will be watching the winter wheat with great interest to see when the leaves begin to elongate indicating dormancy break.  For a period after that, the field will be quite vulnerable to freezing temperatures again.  Luckily we have good standing residue to moderate the daily environmental changes.

Weather for the week:

We have lost most of the protective snow cover on the plots. Sunday was a nice drying day, but Sunday night brought drizzle.  The surface is thawing today, but it is not getting much drier.
