Remember-Field day July 12!

July 8, 2007

It is definitely summer folks. I was out walking fields yesterday when the wind dropped and the temperature was at 98. As I was walking back to the 4 wheeler I was sure glad the gas tank was filled up. It always takes a couple of those days to get your heat tolerance back up.

The winter wheat is ripening rapidly as the yellow headed blackbirds are getting fattened up on it. The pest situation is tough this year. Lots of cattails and water close. The corn will no doubt suffer the same fate. They don't seem to mind cracker shells and 6 shot. They come right back in a few minutes.

We got 2 inches of rain last Monday which is turning out to be good with the heat of last week. I have noticed corn starting to roll up where there was no rain north of Milnor. I sprayed the beans for a second time as foxtail was growing fast.  I have not found any soybean aphids yet, but sounds like they are not too far away. I have a hunch the nodules are not quite up to speed yet as the beans look a little on the dull side and are not growing very fast. I appears where there is some nitrogen that they are bigger. I dug up plants and found a few small nodules, so I hope they start doing their thing.

I need another strategy on weed control in flax. Where the stand is not good the pigweed is having no mercy. I understand that Spartan did a nice job but did not get a section 18 this year. I was over to the Blake Vandervorst's plots in Dickey County and saw most amazing plot of flax in my life. If that does not go 40 bushel no flax plot ever will.

Remember our field day is coming up rapidly. This year we very excited to have Joel Heitkamp from KFGO coming to do his afternoon show live from our plots from 2:00-5:00. The tours will start at 4:30 and go through out the evening.  As always we will have a good lunch which we will begin serving at 5:30. Again on the schedule we will have the soil pit, tours of the plots, and a lot of good discussions.

 Have a good week.
