So, has every one sold their old crop corn and beans yet?? I am not feeling very smart today. Just have to wait for the next weather scare again! Strange how we can finally find dry ground and the east gets some rain.
We sprayed the Spring Wheat with 3 oz Proline + 3 oz folicure with 0.25% NIS/100gallons Wednesday June 13. We used the Teejet Twin Flat Spray tips. I think the timing was pretty good at hitting anthesis. Some Plots were a little on the early side but you can never hit things perfect. Roger Knapp and I were out scouting the spring and winter wheat this afternoon. Winter wheat first. No sign of scab, yet. There is a little wheat stem saw fly showing up. Leaf disease is present but we hope the last shot of Proline/Folicure will carry it through. The Spring Wheat is still looking pretty clean with some tan spot and septoria showing up. Flag leaf looks good. Weed control is looking good. Last year I neglected to use a wild oat product that resulted in more than a small amount of embarrassment. So this year we put Everest on the Winter Wheat and Axial on the spring wheat. Both products are doing their job very well. The Spring Wheat variety is Howard and the winter wheat is CDC Buteo.
The corn and beans are growing rapidly. We sprayed the beans once with Roundup and I am thinking in a couple days the corn will get its 2nd shot. We have a stuggle in the plots with alleys and so many edges. Weeds require much more vigilance than would be required in a regular field. Alfalfa has worked well for the alleys, but unfortunately large parts winter killed 2 years ago. Weeds are coming in the dead spots and a solution still evades me.
Remember our field day is coming up rapidly. This year we very excited to have Joel Heitkamp from KFGO coming to do his afternoon show live from our plots from 2:00-5:00. The tours will start at 4:30 and go through out the evening. . As always we will have a good lunch which we will begin serving at 5:30. Again on the schedule we will have the soil pit, tours of the plots, and a lot of good discussions.
Have a good week.
