CCSP -No till Farm
Grettings,
Many Thanks to all who helped make our field day a success! We had around 160 people to the farm on what turned out to be a picture perfect day. Mick Kjar said it would be nice.(???) The weather service had a 90% chance of rain, some heavy, with high winds and damaging hail a possibility. When I checked the radar the night before there was a storm near Mobridge with hail indicated by radar up to 3.5 inches. It just been that kind of a year.
The crops are looking pretty nice. We had another inch today with reports of 3.0 to our south. With winter wheat harvest not too far away, we will be looking for some dry weather. I would guess we will do pre-harvest roundup with in a week. Beans will need the second shot of roundup shortly. The beans are finally starting to take off, some plots more than others. No sign of aphids yet. Corn has jumped very fast but then it needs to. Some of the low areas have greened up but are still short. I have one plot of flax that really looks nice. Not sure what happened there!! It is on corn ground and is high ground which is kinda like magic this year. Certainly no shortage of moisture. I noticed a small spot in a corn plot which looks like zinc deficiency. I did not put any zinc in furrow because I did not want to take the time. We will try to get a soil sample into Agvise to confirm. It is on some shallow topsoil ground.
We are going to start planting cover crops as soon as it dries up. We will be doing several different mixes. The Wild Rice SCD will have some seed on hand if you are thinking about trying some cover crops this year. So give them a call at 701-724-6226 ext 3 to find out more.
Have a good week.
